Chapter 42

“He got away from us.”

“He got away from you? How is that possible?”

Matt stared at me across the meeting room at the new police station. Alex and I had just returned from Canada the night before. Emptyhanded. And now we were explaining it all to the team that Chief Annie had appointed to work on the case.

This wasn’t a good feeling at all.

I leaned back in my seat with an exhale. “He ran when we started to ask questions, and we set after him but lost him. I provided the local police with a picture of him I had taken at the bar where he worked, and all they could tell us was that his name was Sean Andersson and that he was known locally by most people because he worked at the bar and lived in the apartment above it.

“So, is he the twins’ father or what?” Matt asked.

“We still don’t know that,” I said. “They had no records on him or any DNA we could use to try and do a match.”

I paused and drank coffee before I continued. “I would have stayed and looked for him, but the border patrol had footage of him crossing into the United States about four hours after I lost him on the slopes. He must have gone directly there before I could get his picture out to the police and border patrol. The car he was driving was stolen and later found outside of Albany. That’s where we lost track of his whereabouts. I came home instead.”

“Wow, so nothing, huh?” Matt said.

“I’m sorry I wasted precious time on this,” I said. “I had a hunch and followed it. But I didn’t get anything out of it. I wasted everyone’s time.”

“You don’t say,” Matt said, throwing out his hands. “Well, at least you got to go on a trip with your boyfriend on this department’s expenses. That must have been very nice.”

I stared at my ex-boyfriend sitting across the table from me. What was his problem? Was it just jealousy?

“Wow,” I said. “Bitter much, Matt? I will have you know that Alex paid for his own ticket and food while there. It didn’t cost your department anything. And he’s not my boyfriend. He’s writing a book about me.”

Matt rolled his eyes with a scoff.

“Yeah, right.”

I slammed my hand on the table. “Why are you being like this, Matt? Why can’t you just…?”

Chief Annie cut through. “Now, let’s not fight here. Eva Rae’s hunches are usually very good. We can’t win them all. We need to focus on what we’re doing next. I, for one, would love to talk to the mom again. She needs to explain some things. Where are we on her?”

I nodded. “I know where she is hiding. I can go talk to her.”

Chief Annie smiled. ‘Take Matt with you.”

I paused. “What? Why?”

She lifted both her eyebrows. “Because I say so.”

“I am perfectly capable of….”

“I don’t want you going there alone, and Matt has nothing else to do today, so there you have it.
